Feet....get a proper trim and check for ulcers... Common in situations like this

Don`t know much about Arabs as people have been commenting about their confirmation but this hollowing in that area can be from lack of water. Are they drinking enough and do they get salt in their feed?

When was the last time her teeth were done? Also, she may need to be dewormed again with a different variety. Take a fecal sample to the vet and they will tell you.

My Arabian has the same thing we just give her nonstop amount of hay and its working Pretty good

My 33 yo has hock arthritis. Having body work done on him has helped him with his butt and hips! He gets Triple Crown Senior and Cocosoya oil with whatever hay he can eat. 17 is not too early for senior feed.

Check her teeth!!!

An Arabian will never ever have a big fat rump like a QH or other stock breed.

I bet if you stand them up and really study them you will see very marked differences in their skeletal structure angles. Not that Arabs CAN`T fill out some. It just takes time and lots of cavaletti...grids, trot poles etc to get them to really drop their head and get their rump under and drive from behind. Many travel hollow which doesn`t lead to great muscling in the rear.

Genetics? Lol, I personally have “filled out hips” my daughter didn`t inherit that trait- this after having 2 children so she is lucky!!

This is my Arabian gelding, he`s a bit more sticky than other Arabs I`ve seen, but as you can see his hips look filled out well. Yes, some Arabs are just built that way or are harder to get weight on, but their hips shouldn`t be hollow.

Senior feed worked for mine and she is 25yrs old

Arabs have one less vertebra than other horse species. Thus giving the slope a higher tail carriage of the tail. Also to build hip muscle lots of backing a working off the hind end helps.

Horses that were starved to the point of using their muscles to stay alive need a decent amount of protein rather then fat in their diets. They also need amino acids to digest and use the proteins. what is missing from her diet will depend largely on the hay/roughage she is getting. That deficiency will vary by locality. She has the typical look of a protein starved horse. She cannot add muscle when the building blocks are not there.

Question:

I was wondering if any of you had an idea on why my 17-year-old Arabian mares hips won`t fill out. We got her pretty skinny and have been giving a decent amount of grain and cool calories for about 2 months. Her chest, shoulders, and topline are looking much better but her hips are not filling out. We dewormed her with equinox when we got her. What do you think? Thanks! Here is a pic of her:)
