Importance of fluids

In this article, we will talk about the hydration that every horse needs. We will explain why the correct amount of fluid replacement is important and what environmental factors may affect body temperature. In the article, you can read more about the sweating process and what you need to know and be careful when riding your horse during warm weather.

Inadequate fluid replacement can not only cause overheating, but it also affects the entire cardiovascular system of the horse. Of course, the exact amount of water that the horse needs are influenced by a number of factors - primarily activity and temperature. However, it also depends, for example, on the size and type of the horse. In general, it is calculated as 50ml / kg, but in hot weather, it is necessary to drink 40-50 liters of water per day.

It is dangerous and meaningless to leave the horse without water!

Unfortunately, it is a widespread misconception that the horse will perform better on the racetrack if it is not eaten directly before the race. The extra weight can actually increase the competition time somewhat, but dehydration has a nearly equal impact on performance as there is a high risk of thermal decompression.

Practical advice for riding your horse during a summer heat wave

Horses have a normal body temperature between 37 and 38.5°C. During intensive training, it is not uncommon for this value to rise above 40 degrees. The horse, however, should be able to recover from it as there is a risk of heat shock above 41 degrees. It is necessary to know that the horses are just as vulnerable to different kinds of heat as humans are.

Always take the time to go for a walk! In hot, dry, humid weather, the sweating of the horse does not necessarily occur immediately. An easy half-hour work may not make your horse produce such an intense sweat, but then it must be time for post-production. If you disassemble it immediately and get the horse back to the stable, the sweating will occur when you are not near it. In this situation, even in the summer, the horse may be cold.

Always take good care of the humid, warm weather, because high humidity can reduce sweating and heat.

Anhidrosis is present in horses as well

There are people who are unable to sweat normally. Some are only partially affected by the disease and they do not notice the problem. But those with severe anhidrosis may be burdened heavily by a lighter walk.

Anhidrosis also occurs in horses and is mainly found in horses imported from cooler, wetlands. In addition, it can also cause failure of the sweat glands. Until now, no solution has been found to treat whole-body anhydride, so horses are usually returned to their original habitat.
