A horse that lives free in the wild can eat 16 hours a day. On the other hand, horses that live in stable are fed 3 times a day and drink 40 liters a day. A horse in nature will eat slowly, selecting his food, including various vegetable foods, flowers, leaves, roots etc.

Horses have only one small stomach, unlike the cows that have two stomachs. One of the disadvantages in the horse diet is that they cannot regurgitate food and chew it again because the esophagus has special valves that rotate only in one direction. Horses must, therefore, be carefully cared for, because poor and irregular nutrition can lead to stopping digestion, which in some cases can be fatal for the horse.

Loving horses is not enough if you decide to buy one. Providing them love will not satisfy their need for food. Depending on the breed you must know that one Vladimir Heavy Draft Horse and another horse breed that is smaller in size will not eat the same. However, here we will make a list of the average needs for one horse:

Hay. A horse weighing 500 kg needs 10 – 15 kg of hay per day, a month 300 – 450 kg.

Bran can be added to steamed oats once a day. Before feeding, everything must be mixed. Proportions: 1.5 – 2 kg of oats and 500 grams of bran.

Pure oats are a very good source of energy and calories. You can give your horse 5 kg of pure oats per day. In a month you will need 150kg.

Vegetables – carrots, beets, potatoes. Usually, a horse can eat 5kg vegetables per day. Each month they will eat 150 kg of vegetables.

Horses need much more supplements to get vitamins and nutrients. The additives include chalk and probiotics to support the microflora. There are many supplements and each owner chooses his own set. For the best results ask the coach or a knowledgeable rider. Supplements are quite expensive and therefore they will cost you the same as the main food.

An average horse will intake 5 to 10 gallons of water per day. If the horse drinks too much water, he may suffer from certain health conditions.

In order to save money it is better to buy hay for the whole winter, several bags of oats and vegetables.
