An astonishing statement in 2013 at the annual conference of the World Horse Welfare charity in London by Anna, Princess Royal surprised many horse lovers. She thinks that we should consider eating horse meat. In her opinion, this would improve standards of care for the animals. She also added that owners might take better care of their horses when they were alive if they thought they could later sell them for meat. So if they create a market for the horse meat, they would breed more animals and keep them from disappearing.


From the edge of extinction to the dining table

According to British Rare Breeds Survival Trust 2014, four British horse breeds are on the edge of extinction: Cleveland Bay, Eriskay Pony, Hackney Horse and Pony, and Suffolk Punch. Less than 300 breeding horses are registered from these breeds. Dales and Exmoor Pony are endangered breeds, where only about 300 to 500 registered horses are known. Clydesdale, Dartmoor and Welsh Mountain Pony are also moved in the vulnerable category with 500 to 900 registered horses.

The Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies largely live wild. They used to play an important role in the ecosystem of the 368 square miles national park. In the 1930s, there were over 25,000 ponies here, and today there are only about 800.

The first suggestion that seems to be a waste of time is to benefit and thus become a market for horse meat. According to the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association (DHPA), the best way to rescue these breeds in the ancient swamps is to create a market for meat consumption.

The daughter of Anna, Princess Royal also suggested that horse-carriers would not be that concerned about their horses if they knew they could sell them at least as slaughter animals in the worst case.


To eat or not to eat, this is the question

The sale of the horses for horsemeat would encourage horse owners to keep the foals at least until the age of three - as long as they could be sold for meat. Animals that they do not want to sell as a slaughtered animal can be sold as a workhorse, even when they are 3 years old. However, the possibility of selling slaughter animals increases the chance of a horse to get to the right farmers.

The South West Equine Protection organization opposes this proposal. One representative of the organization said that it would be terrible to see foals that could be a hamburger in a few months. RSPCA - the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a charity in England and Wales, which promotes animal welfare. They say that cutting off horses is an emotional issue, as many people concern them as companions rather than as a source of food, which means that the RSPCA also supports this view. Our main concern is whether the slaughtered animals were properly kept, shipped and slaughtered - preferably near the holding.


Horsemeat is an absolute personal taste. If you do not want to send your horse to a slaughterhouse, do not do it. If you do not want to eat horse meat, do not do it. However, some people are trying to find out that the way to the slaughterhouse is by far not the worst-case scenario that can happen with a horse, and on the other hand, the horse does not matter exactly what will happen to him after his death. Keep in mind the two rules: let the animal have a good life and easy death. We should not see everything in black and white and accept that we are not the same.
