How much does it cost to have a horse

Toni Vckovski 5th December, 2018 507

When a childhood dream comes true you will know exactly what happiness means. However, it is really sad when you know that horses and horseback riding have become fashionable. We see people riding one or two times in the park, and then they buy a horse, but they do not know what to do with them. They no longer can take care of the horses or cannot afford to take care of them, so the horse will be sold or sent to slaughter. Horses are complex and powerful animals and it is not easy to take care of them.

How to choose the right horse for you

There is no average or fair price for a horse. You can buy a foal for several thousand dollars, but the price can be much higher.

Generally the price depends on:

  • Pedigree
  • Age of the horse
  • Breed
  • Purposes
  • Skills
  • Health
  • Character

Inbred horses can be cheaper than purebred, but there is no general rule. Each horse has its own character from birth, but it depends a lot on where and with whom the horse has grown. Sometimes, a mongrel horse does not allow anyone near, because the owner has beaten him with a stick for disobedience, so the horse is always waiting something bad to happen. On the other side, the seemingly complex thoroughbred horse was born in and raised in good hands, so it is balances and loves people.

If your whole experience is a few rides then you should not aim for a sports horse. Riding a horse just for hobby requires a horse that is balanced and in good health. This is a horse on which you can safely go to the fields, swim in the river or take part in local amateur competitions. It is also better to buy a mare, not a stallion. Here, too, there is no general rule, but usually, stallions are more spirited than mares and without proper handling, they can be even dangerous. Their task in the herd is to show authority and drive away other stallions from their mares.

No matter what kind of horse you chose, you must know that you have to let them run every day. Without movement, any horse becomes a killing machine. It is simply in the blood of the horse- to run in the open and expend energy, not to stay in the stable for a week and then practice just an hour. These horses can be unpredictable and quite dangerous.

When buying a horse, there are usually two options: a trained adult horse or a foal. The foal can be raised successfully, but it takes time. Between the purchase and the first full exit will be three years, so think about every aspect and then bring the right decision.
