A horse is a mammal which belongs to the family of Equidae. This animal species has evolved over the past 60 million years. It is referred to as a single-toed animal in today time. The horse`s anatomy helps them to figure out their predators. The expected life of the horse is from 25 to 30 years. The age depends upon the breed as well as on the environment which they live in. As a matter of fact, in the 19th-century Old Billy, a horse lived till the age of 62.


There are various definitions which can be used to define a horse age, such as:

  • Foal- a horse with either sex is less than one year old.
  • Yearling- a horse with one or two years old.
  • Colt- a horse under the age of four.
  • Filly- a female horse under the age of four.
  • Mare- a female horse of four years and older
  • Stallion- a male horse of four years and older.
  • Gelding- a male horse with any age.
The horses exhibit in various colors. They also have distinctive markings of their own. Interestingly a horse is recognized first by its color than by the breed or sex. A horse with the same breed is alternatively distinguished by its markings. Researchers have found about the genes which create these coat colors and still the research is going on to identify many distinguishing features of the horses. The height of the horses is measured in hands. The height depends upon the breed which a horse belongs to. For example, the height of a light riding horse is usually from 14 to 16 hands and they also weigh from 330 to 550 kilograms. The horse that still holds the record for the maximum height is Mammoth with 21.5 hands i.e. 86.5 inches and weighing 1500 kilograms. And the smallest horse named Thumbelina with a height of 17 inches and weighing 26 kilograms.


A very important thing about this species is that they can sleep by standing as well by lying down. These species have a very old relationship with human beings. Human beings in earlier centuries used the horses for domestic purposes. This practice evolved during the time. These domesticated horses are trained in the harness between the ages two and four. They reach the adult stage by five. Interestingly, today there are 300 breeds of horses in the world.
Horse breeds are divided into three categories:

  • Spirited hot blood - speed
  • Cold bloods - slow
  • Warmbloods - developed from hot and cold blood
These species are used for various purposes such as for agriculture, competitions, working activities etc. In history, horses were used for various purposes as well as in war, riding.


The riding of horses led to the development of techniques on how to ride a horse and also many methods were developed to control them. The horse also produces various products such as milk, meat, hairs etc. To keep a domesticated horse healthy you have to provide it with good food, shelter as well as a good environment to live in.
