Horse Diseases - Precaution is Better than Cure!

Horses can be subjected to various diseases and peculiar conditions. Horses and ponies mostly get infected by diseases due to mosquito and tick bites. The most widespread ailments seen in horses are caused by viruses and bacterias. Horse diseases exhibit several symptoms, ranging from temporal side effects such as diarrhea to rather more severe symptoms like deprival of muscle control. A few commonly found diseases in horses and ponies are Cushing`s disease, tetanus, Equine Encephalitis.


Cushing`s disease is one of the most common ailments that attack the whole endocrine system. This is rather incurable but can be taken care of in most situations with proper guidance and medication. This disease results in the malfunctioning of the pituitary gland by causing it to secrete an excessive amount of the cortisol hormone. This hormone is responsible for the regulation of many functions in the horse but if it is manufactured in an amuck manner it can bring about symptoms like uncommon appetite and thirst, weight loss despite a good appetite, frequent urination, thick and wavy coat. The Cushings disease occurs mostly in old age but as many of the ailments of this malady are accredited to ageing only after the horse has suffered from the condition for a long time.

Tetanus is a perilous condition that is communicated to the horse or pony by bacterias entering any wound on the body of the horse. The foul can also acquire this disease from the mother via the umbilical cord. The mundane symptoms of this condition are muscle rigidity and colic. The horse suffers spasm in the hind legs, neck, jaw, and neck and also close to the wound. Tetanus will eventually kill a horse through respiratory paralysis if it is left untreated. Tetanus can be alleviated by cleansing the wound and removing the tissue from it antibiotics can control the disease and completely cure it.


Equine encephalitis is caused by mosquito bites and can cause a severe viral infection. This disease comes in various forms namely western, eastern and Venezuelan encephalitis with each attacking the horses Central Nervous System. The initial symptom of this disease is high fever lasting for a duration of 2 to 3 days.

This condition causes the horse`s brain to inflame over time. With this, the horse starts losing his coordination and becomes terribly sluggish and also loses control over its muscle. Paralysis and absolute seizure is the final stage of equine encephalitis. The Eastern version of equine encephalitis is the most perilous of them all having a mortality rate of approximately 90 percent. The cure for equine encephalitis must begin as soon as it is detected in the horse. Vaccination shots are the best way to protect the horse from this disease and the procedure should be carried out by a licensed veterinarian.


Another common disease which horses contract is equine influenza which affects the upper Respiratory System of the horse or pony with symptoms ranging from high fever to cough and also lack appetite. The Potomac Horse fever is another mild disease which causes diarrhea.
