6 Most Popular Horse Myths

21st May, 2019 278

The horse has been one of the most consistent companions and oldest domesticated animal, known to humankind for centuries. Horses have been part of the folk stories since time immemorial and have always been figured as one of the bravest allies of warriors. They have done many warriors proud by their heroic deeds and have been the driving force behind many victories man has had on fellow men.

Despite living close to men, humans never understood, and they attributed many myths to them. Some of the widely believed ones are being discussed here to overcome the misconceptions about horse behavior.

1. Horses are not intelligent animals

Most people think horses are dumb animals because they do not understand what they are told to do. Horses, in fact, are stubborn by nature and need to be handled with love. There are some specific ways to make a horse do what you ask it to do. Experts noted that horses are more obedient when treated with respect and tenderness – although they are durable and robust creatures and have high endurance, stamina, and resilience for hard work.

2. Horses behave the same as dogs do

If horses serve humans as dogs do, that doesn`t mean they are like dogs. Horses are herbivorous, love to live their lives by themselves, and are not known to be violent. They have little or no sense of belonging, and unlike dogs, they do not respond to a situation until persuaded to perform. You can only assume that horses are lazy.

3. Horses are natural performers

Horses do not perform an act on their own despite being trained to do it, so you must prod them. People observed that even if a horse has been trained to jump six feet, it will not jump on its own and a rider is needed to prompt it to perform. A horse has never won a race on its own will.

4. Horses have a language

Horses have no technique to communicate with each other by emitting sound. Their neighing is just a way to clean their nasal system. The best way horses communicate with others is by using body language. Otherwise, they are quite friendly creatures.

5. Horse hooves are solid

A most common perception because the feet are large and seem like attached to the legs. Hooves of horses are dead skin cells and tissues mixed covering the bone. They do not grow big enough because they erode naturally. They act like soft pads for the horses when they walk.

6. Horse riding is easy

When you are observing a rider, it seems as if horse riding is comfortable – like the rider is just sitting on the horseback. Actually, it is not that easy. You will come to know by actually riding a horse when muscles will ache, and the inner thighs will get sore. Horses have to be gently nudged and kicked to make them walk, trot, or run – they do not understand verbal commands.
