Unicorn and the Evil Wizard - Fable about Unicorns
Once in a faraway land there was a little boy called Rollo who helped a woodcutter carry wood from the forest to the village. The boy spent a great deal of time in the woods and knew all the animals that lived there. One day as he was exploring the forest, he heard whines that sounded like an injured animal. He searched everywhere and finally came across a pure, white animal lying with its legs caught in a trap. Sorry for the poor animal, Rollo freed him and fed the weak animal fruits and water from the spring. Much rejuvenated the animal looked up at Rollo with grateful eyes, and since that day the beautiful animal followed Rollo about everywhere.
As the animal grew up, Rollo realized that it was no ordinary animal. That it had magical powers soon became evident. By its long pointed horn, Rollo realized that the animal was a unicorn. Rollo had a great deal of luck whenever the two were together. His load of wood seemed lighter, his injuries healed more easily, whatever Rollo wished for started coming true. The two became fast friends and were soon inseparable. Rollo knew better than to exploit the creature for his magic and was happy and content with the way things were.
But on a mountain nearby, lived a cunning wizard, who heard rumors about the unicorn`s magical powers. He hatched an evil plan of luring the unicorn away from Rollo and using the innocent creature for his magical experiments. One night, the wizard came to Rollo`s house in the dead of night and whisked off the unicorn in a sack to his castle. The next morning Rollo realized what had happened, and he determined that he would do everything possible to save his friend. So he trudged up the mountain until he reached the castle of the wizard. High walls surrounded the castle and Rollo was in despair as to how to get past them. He called upon his forest friends to help him, and a huge bird was the first to appear.
Remembering all the help that Rollo had given him, the bird flew Rollo on his back to the roof of the castle. Rollo entered the castle, searched until he had found the imprisoned unicorn. Just then, the wizard entered and spotted Rollo. Rollo kept his wits about him and told the wizard that even he wanted to serve under such a great magician. “But before that, I would like to see an example of your magical powers”, said Rollo. Cleverly he asked the magician to turn the unicorn into a mouse. The wizard laughed, “That`s easy,” he said. Pointing his wand at the unicorn, he uttered a spell and in place of the unicorn was a white mouse. The mouse escaped from the chamber and ran away up the stairs to the roof. Picking up the wizard`s wand, the boy followed the mouse and once on the roof pointed the wand at it and uttered the same spell that he had heard the magician said. The mouse transformed back into a unicorn, and the two climbed on the back of the waiting bird and fled from the wizard`s palace to never return.
